According to the law of universal gravitation, a particle attracts every other particle in the universe using a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
The moon is a lot smaller than Earth. It is about 1/4th the size of Earth, with a mass of 1/80th of Earth. Thats the reason why the moon's surface gravity is 83.30% less than the earth's gravity. I use the term "surface gravity" which refers to the downward "pull" that objects experience when resting on or moving near a larger body. Earth's surface gravity is 9.80 m/s² whereas Moon's is only 1.622 m/s².
