Although the author and the district officer had become good friends, the former refused to meet the latter to get his childhood friend Baldev’s son released. He claimed that the police had falsely implicated his son. Baldev did not give an opportunity for the writer to turn down his request. However, the writer was not interested in getting the district officer involved.
But, soon Baldev came once again along with his son and tells the author about the release. He expressed his gratitude to the author and gave him a lot of gifts. While the author felt guilty and remains quiet about not having done anything, he started admiring the district officer secretly because of the gifts he got on his behalf and for having released the accused.
