why is the narrator left in despair at the end of the story old man at the bridge

the narrator is atlast left in despair because inspite of his several attempts and trials to dispose the old man to safety before the war begins, he is unable to do so and hence sad at his misfortune and fate which due to his old age and incompetency he could not overcome.
