This was the time just before the French revolution, France was ruled by Prince Louis XVI and his wife Mary Antoinette. They led such an extravagant life that there were continuous famines and when a rumour, of Mary telling the people to eat cake when there wasn't any bread, spread out like wild fire and the people revolted against this. They started the French revolution and guillotined Louis and Mary, thus ending monarchy.
