Because green plants contain chlorophyll which traps sunlight. Sunlight is essential to carry out photosynthesis. This process makes the plant food. That is why green plants are autotrophs, while white plants are not.

hey hers your answer,
plants make there food by the process of photosynthesis and to carry out this process plant needs chlorophyll. and the chlorophyll is what makes the plant green so as to prepare food, plants need chlorophyll which is green in color so in absence of chlorophyll no photosynthesis takes place and hence no food is produced
