Why is the plasma membrane called a selectively permeable membrane?

plasma membrane is called selectively permeable membrane because it allow the movement of substance in and out of the cell only which is good for it. Other harmful substance cannot enter in the cell.

plasma membrane permits the entry and exit of some materials in and out of the cell and it also prevent movement of some other material so it is called selectively permeable membrane.
