The goldfinch flies away from the branches of the laburnum tree, laden with beautiful golden flowers, after creating a lot of commotion. It had come to feed its fledglings. Once the feeding is over, it leaves the tree with a delicate whistle, fading away into the horizon. The tree and its surroundings are quiet once more. The poet finds the sudden quiet, eerie.
