"CAGED BIRDS" refers to the african american.....whereas

"FREE BIRDS" refers to white americans...

White americans(free birds) have full access to their land....whereas

African Americans(caged birds) are deprived of the freedom....they don't have access to their land.....they don't have freedom to speak....to eat worms

By the poem...."I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRDS SINGS " poet wants to convey the problems of the african american to the readers....so that their voices of grievances may go far and wide...

Hence, I know why the caged bird sings referred as freedom struggle for Americans.........
