The poet gets surprised when he gets an answer from the rain, as it is inanimate and cannot speak. In this poem, to the poet's and reader's amazement, the rain gives a reply which has been translated by the poet for the readers.

The poet was surprised because as soon as he asked a question while it was raining he receives an answer to his question.
- He was astonished because the rain had replied to his question and that is not possible.
- The question that was asked by the poet was "who are you" and to this, he gets a reply saying that it is the poem of the earth.
- The rain explains the way it takes place by going up and forms clouds by the rising vapor and comes down back to earth in the form of rain.
