It is so because hydrogen has 1 valence electron in its outer most shell . so according to modern periodic table , hydrogen can be arranged in halogen famaly i.e . group no. hydrogen resembles like both the alkali metals and the halogens

Position of hydrogen is not justified as it shows similarities with alkali metals like Na, K etc in having 1 electron in outermost shell and also it shows similarities with halogen in terms of electronegativity. So it position could not be justified
