Why is the presence of mucus essential in the stomach?

this is so because mucus protects the inner lining of stomach from the action of hydrochloric acid

Mucus is protective layer in stomach which help in digestion by secretion of digestive enzymes. It also trap harmful virus and bacteria which causes damage to our health and make stomach lubricant for moment of food
