The unwanted plants that grow in-between crops are called weeds. The process of removal of such unwanted plants is called weeding. It has to be done 2-3 times in a week, and usually practised during the earlier stages of crop cultivation. The advantages of weeding are:

The weeds compete with the actual crop for space, nutrients and water. Hence, the removal of these unwanted plants provides an ample amount of nutrients and water to the crops.

It increases the fertility of the soil.

A weeded crop will aid in better penetration of the sun and the wind beneath the soil and also reduces the humidity.

Due to better penetration of the wind and the sun, it reduces the number of diseases caused by crops and also helps in controlling pests.

It loosens the soil, which helps in the penetration of water to the roots of the cultivated plant.

Despite the advantages of weeding, it is advised to keep a few spots of these unwanted plants between the crops. This ill act as a refuge and will help in conserving the ecosystem.

The growth of weed can be controlled or stopped by using chemicals like herbicides, mulch or can also be controlled mechanically.
