it helps us to determine the poles of the magnet.it repels ,if the poles are like(north to north or south to south) it attracts if the poles are unlike (north to south or south to north).

when two similar poles meet,they repel.when two opposite poles meet,they attract each other.therefore,repulsion is the right way to confirm the magnet force.

Attraction force between two materials could be due to gravitational force also, although it is very small. But repulsion force only exists between similar poles. Electrical charge induction or magnetic induction is also possible that can bring two materials together. ie., one magnet or electric charge can induce opposite charge in another material nearby. then they can attract. But repulsion force if it is present, we are sure that they are opposite magnetic poles.
