THE BRITISH INTRODUCED THE NEW ENFIELD RIFLE TO THE SEPOYS. THEY ALSO INTRODUCED NEW CARTRIDGES. FOR OPENING THE CARTRIDGES, THE SEPOYS HAD TO TEAR A COVER WITH THEIR TEETH. LATER THERE WAS A RUMOR  THAT THE CARTRIDGES WERE COVERED WITH THE FAT OF PIGS AND COWS. FOR HINDUS, COW WAS RECOGNIZED AS GODS AND PIGS WERE SACRED TO MUSLIMS, SO TEARING THE COVER WITH THEIR TEETH WAS VIOLATING THE RELIGION. THE SEPOYS THOUGHT THAT THE BRITISH WERE TRYING TO INSULT THEIR RELIGION, SO THE TURNED VIOLENT AND WERE ANGRY AT THE BRITISH
