Indian historians call it the first war of independence as it was the first time that different section of Indian society United and out as the one Nation to throw off the shackles of foreign domination.
It's immediate couse that the cartridges of the new Enfield rifle had a greased paper cover which had to be bitten off before the cartridge was loaded into the rifle it was said that decrease composed of a brief and pig fat the both Hindus and the Muslims refused to use them as the cow is a sacred to the Hindus and the Pig is detestable to the Muslims.

the immediate cause-In the Enfield rifle the greased paper on the cartridge was to be bitten off before it was loaded into the rifle. It was said that the greased paper composed of pig and cow fat and The Hindus and Muslims refused it as cow is sacred to the Hindus and pig is detestable to the Muslims. So Mangal Pandey, a sepou from Barrackpore, refused to use it and killed his sergeant. He was arrested, tried and executed. Thus the revolt of 1857 broke out
