Why is the shadows of flying aereplanes cannot be seen?

Planes shadows are normally only seen when a plane is close to the ground. Because the sun is a disc of light and not a virtual point of light, there is a point where from your position the plane no longer covers the sun completely. This is the point where the shadow effect starts to diminish significantly. As the plane goes higher, in comparison to you the less of the sun it will cover and the less strong and distinct the shadow will be.
You will notice this in flying that if you follow your planes shadow on the ground as you gain altitude that at first it is sharp but then it gets larger and fuzzier. Eventually, both because of the fuzziness and the height it is hard to see where the plane's shadow is. This is probably the effect you are seeing.
