The size of an atoms decreases from left to right along the period for normal elements because on moving left to right in a period the total effective nuclear charge increases because there is an increase in number of electrons and protons in the atom. Due to this the outer most shell experience more attractive force towards the nucleus and hence the size of atom decreases.
