The blue colour of the sky is due to scattering of sunlight by the molecules of the atmosphere. As the sunlight passes through atmosphere, the Nitrogen and oxygen molecules of air absorbs some amount of sunlight and re-emit it.The free gas molecules scatter light in all directions. light of short wavelength (blue) is scattered about 10 times more than other light hence the sky is blue.

A clear cloudless day-time sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colours because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight.
