The snake has been compared to cattle in the poem The Snake by D.H. Lawrence to create an image of the composure and relaxed mood of the snake. The cattle are very peaceful and unhurried when they are drinking water in herds. They are not in any panic or hurry to drink it and run. They enjoy drinking water and satiate their thirst thoroughly. While drinking, they often look up and around in a relaxed manner.  Similarly, the snake that had come to the poet's water trough to quench its thirst was as unhurried and relaxed as the cattle. It also looked up once or twice like cattle.

The snake compared to cattle because the snake lifted his head after taking water , as the cattle do, and then looked at me impassively as the drinking cattle do.

The poet like ❤ the snake because he was felt happy that the snake had come to drink at his water - trough like a guest and would go back ⏪ peacefully, contended and thankfully into the burning hole ⭕ of ➡ the earth .
