The narrator, a small boy, was planning go to Norway.

As his grandmother fell ill, her doctor advised them to go to Bournemouth, a place visited by old people.

It was believed that the bracing fresh air of Bournemouth kept old people alive for some extra years.

Although the grandmother didn’t believe such things, she agreed to visit Bournemouth. She thought of obeying the doctor.
