The story 'A Day in the Country ' is so called as it is based on incidents in the life of three country folks in one single day.
Explanation:
- A little boy had trapped his hand inside a hole in the bark of a tree in the forest. His orphan sister was frantically looking for the poor old cobbler 'Terenty' who was the only person kind to them.
- A fierce thunderstorm was threatening the Country side. At this juncture the boy was all alone in the forest. Terenty, as expected by the little girl, got out the boy's hand. As they walked out of the forest Terenty shared his huge store of knowledge and wisdom regarding the country side and Nature.
- He like all the villagers had gathered all this knowledge through experience and not through reading books.
- As he told the children which bird was good and which wasn't, which plant or flower could be treated for what purpose the day slowly retired. The two children returned to the village all tired out.
- In the evening they slept peacefully whilst Terenty came to pray for them and keep bread below their pillows. This the story ends narrating all the incidents that took place in one day in the Country.
