why is the symbol S for sulphur, but Na for sodium and Si for silicon? ​

it is because, the scientist try to give all the elements different symbols and the main reason is many elements before had some different names and it might be the starting of that names also...

Like gold had it's old name as aurum and it's symbol is au, copper hadcuprum and it's symbol is cu, Iron had ferry and it is Dr, in the sane way sodium had natrium, so it is na.
