why is the symbol S for sulphur but Na for sodium and Si for silicon

The symbols for many of the elements in the periodic table are derived from their Latin names, such as Au for gold, derived from Aurum, and Ag for Silver, derived from Argentum. The same applies for Sodium, derived from Natrium, thus Na.

Because the latin name of sodium is natrium so the symbol is Na

the latin name of sulphur and silicon is sulphur and silicon so that there symbol is S and Si
