The reason behind the cold wave is due to persistence of cold northwesterly winds in lower levels over northwest India and other favourable meteorological conditions.

Also North India is colder because of Arctic Ocean, the presence of Himalayas and it's distance from the equator.

The position of the Earth is titled by certain degrees on its path around the sun and this tilt is constantly towards one side only.
