The term blue-green algae are misleading as these are not algae, these are bacteria which are also known as cyanobacteria.

These bacteria obtain their food from photosynthesis, are prokaryotic and can produce oxygen.

The term algae are usually used for organisms which are eukaryotic.

They get the name blue-green from their colour.
