The tip of needles is usually very small. This is because as the surface are is small, more pressure will be exerted. As we know, greater the surface area, lesser will be the pressure and vice versa. In short, pressure and area are inversely proportional to one another. So the surface are is less and more pressure will exerted.

A needle is used for piercing a surface (cloth, paper or wood).
When a needle is pushed against a surface, the end of pin exerts some pressure on the surface.
Larger is this pressure, easier it will be to pierce the surface.
Now, pressure depends both on force applied as well as area of the surface in contact.
A sharp pointed end has a very small surface area to be in contact with, due to which pressure becomes very large at that point.
This helps in easier working with needle.
