Why is the treatment of acidic and basic soil with chemical substances?

ACIDIC SOIL SHOULD BE TREATED WITH QUICKSLIME OR SLAKE LIME.
AND IF THE SOIL IS TOO BASIC...THEN MANURES SHOULD BE ADDED.
