I do not think there is a “why”. Most of the Universe is a hostile and uninhabitable waste of vacuum and radiation. There appear to be no nearby objects which can support life although our planet Earth does. We carry on our lives, sometimes frightened but mostly OK and in the knowledge that our existence is very fragile. Maybe sometime in the next 100,000 years we will be struck by an asteroid, or climate change might give us another Ice Age, or maybe a super-volcano will explode….or maybe all three. We just have to carry on and do the best we can to improve our lot and the situation of others less fortunate.

100,000 years is the merest blink of an eye in the vast reaches of time and space..
