Iodine is one of the most important element in the production of thyroxine Hormone by the thyroid gland. Deficiency of iodine in the diet could lead to the deficiency of Thyroxine hormone in body. Thyroxine hormone regulates the fats, protein and carbohydrate metabolism of the body.

Deficiency of iodine in the diet produces less thyroxine hormone which leads to Goitre. It causes the neck to swell up and enlarges the thyroid gland.
