why is the voltmeter is connected in parallel

voltmeter has very high resistance when placed in parallel, the total effective resistance doesn't change much and the approximately same amount of required current flows through the circuit

in parallel circuit,
1/effective resistance=1/r1+1/r2....
so the net value is always less than individual resistors

hope it helps you
