why is the weight of an object on the moon 1/6th its weight on the earth?

the weight on the moon is 1/6 of the original weight because of the gravitational force....
weight is equal to mass*gravity.on earth it would be mass*9.8
as the gravity on moon is 1/6 the of the gravity of the earth the formula would be mass*9.8*1/6
so the weight on the moon would be the 1/6th of the weight on the earth
