because it can be easily seen in the mirror of other vehicles so they can see that an ambulance is coming & they can go far from the ambulance

So that the driver of the vehicle in front of the ambulance sees it laterally inverted on his rear view screen as AMBULANCE and gives side to pass the ambulance first.
