why is the word 'short' is longest than the word 'long'?

Why is “long” shorter than “short”? Because the English alphabet has only 26 letters, which have to be combined to convey sounds like “ng”, “sh” and “or”. We really need at least 44 letters to properly cover all the different sounds in spoken English
