Why is their an increase in bond order in going from O² to O²+ while in order N² to N²+?​

Electron is lost from bonding MO and the bond order decreases from 3 to 2.5.As a result, bond dissociation energy decreases and the bond length increases.

  • In case of oxygen, O2  → O2+   + e-

Electron is lost from antibonding MO and the bond order increases from 2 to 2.5. As a result, bond dissociation energy increases but bond length decreases.
