Why is there a 'D' in fridge, but not in refrigerator?

It's because there used to be a very popular refrigerator manufacturer named Frigidaire. So popular that everyone had one, and started calling the product 'the frigidaire'. Shortened to 'frig', and then here is where our faith in English is restored.
When written, 'frig' looks weird, and reads like it rhymes with fig, so we used our language skills and starting spelling it 'fridge'
