Why is there a double bond in no3?

Answer:

N can not make bonds greater than 4. It doesn't have any empty orbital to do so. Thus, making 3 double bonds, i.e 6 bonds is not possible. Hence it forms 1 double bond and 2 co-ordinate bond in NO3–
