Environmental law, also known as environmental and natural resources law, is a collective term describing the network of treaties, statutes, regulations, common and customarylaws addressing the effects of human activity on the natural environment.

There are demerits to stringent enforcement of environmental laws. If the laws do not create room for utilization of natural resources in any way at all, people are unable to exploit the resources in ways that would be useful to them without depleting or degrading them. It is therefore necessary that the laws be relaxed to alow for innovation and mindful utilisation
