There is a need of food security in India because of the following reasons-

1. Within countries, the food-insecure poor are found in different subgroups, differentiated by location, occupational patterns, asset ownership, race, ethnicity, age and gender. Most of the poor and food-insecure live in rural areas. They are landless or unable to create a food-secure livelihoods on the land available to them.

2. In urban areas, household food security is primarily a problem of low real wage rates and low levels of employment. Food deficiency and malnutrition tend to be less prevalent in urban areas. But they could become increasingly important problems in the future as the rate of urbanization increases.

3. Having adequate household access to food is necessary but not sufficient to ensure that all household members consume an adequate diet. By the same token, consuming an adequate diet is necessary but not sufficient for maintaining a healthy nutritional status.

Or another answer

1. The poorest section of the society might be food insecure when the country faces a national disaster/calamity like earthquake, drought, flood, Tsunami, widespread failures of crops causing famines, etc.

2. Due to a natural calamity, total production of foodgrains decreases.

3. It creates a shortage of food in the affected areas.

4. Due to shortage of food, the prices go up.

5. At the high prices, some people cannot afford to buy food.
