A person having goitre has a swelling in front of the neck because the thyroid gland gets enlarged.

Sometimes due to some problems, the thyroid gland does not secrete much thyroid hormones. Due to this deficiency of thyroid hormone occurs. This may result in hypothyroidism and simple goitre may happen.

When an individual does not get enough iodine in his or her diet, it may result in very low secretion of the thyroid hormone due to which the thyroid gland might get enlarged, thus causing goitre.
