There are reservoirs behind every dam as it is where the water gets stored so that it could be uses for various purposes like for irrigation. And in case if the dams get damaged due to the high flow of water current then in such emergency cases a reservoir is needed.

Reservoirs act as substitutes to dams.
If by chance dams break then the reservoir is still there to store and supply water for different purposes.
