Hey!
_______________
An athlete is made to fall on a cushioned bed. This is just to increase the time of fall of athlete after a jump. This is to prevent injuries as well.
If we fall on a cemented area, we may get hurt. But it won't be in case of a soft bed.

This is done to prevent injury to the person when he falls down after making a high jump. When he falls on a a soft landing site[either cushion or sand], then the it takes a longer time to stop comparatively if there was no cushion or bag of sand
The rate of change of momentum of the athlete is less as the TIME INCREASES due to which a smaller force will act on athlete.
So, person does not get injury when fall on cushion or bed of sand as it reduces the momentum which decreses opposing force. .
If a person is made to fall on a hard surface like cement floor,
then his momentum is reduced to zero in very less time and thus rate of change of momentum increases due to which large opposing force will act on athlete. Which gives a serious injury to the person.
TIME PERIOD DECREASES MOMENTUM INCREASES AND OPPOSING FORCE ALSO INCREASES .
