A person is considered poor if his/her income level or consumption level falls below a given minimum necessary level to fulfill basic needs.
The major reasons for poverty  in India begins from the period when the British rule came into effect.

1.The historical reason is the low level of economic development under the British Colonial Administration. The British discouraged development of industries like textiles and ruined India's traditional handicrafts.

2.The second reason is high growth rate of population.

3. The third reason is Green revolution.

4.Huge income inequalities is an  another reason for high poverty rates. This is due to the unequal  distribution of land and resources.

5. Socio-Cultural and economic factors are also responsible for poverty.

6.High level of indebtedness is both the cause and effect of poverty.
