Ethanol is converted to ethyl chloride with the help of thionyl chloride in the presence of pyridine. In this reaction the products formed are Ethyl chloride and hydrochloric acid. Pyridine which is a base neutralizes the HCl formed so that pure ethyl chloride can be extracted.
