Society is rapidly changing with technological advancements and schools cannot be left behind. The traditional learning that takes place works, but a change is needed. A change in the school system is needed because society is changing. If schools are not involved with the technological advancements then the students will not be educated. And more importantly, the students are the adults of the future therefore; we must educate the students if we want these technological advancements to be used to there full capacity. As Monty Neill says, "The computer is the extension of the white-man." (Neill Pg.422) The one part I disagree with is that computers are extensions of all people not just whites. On the other hand many people would argue that if it were not broke, don't fix it. I believe that the traditional school system is broken, they are not teaching the necessary tools for the changing technological society.
I don't necessarily think that we should abolish traditional schooling, but incorporate both traditional and technological learning. I think the idea that a student can go to class and not participate and is still considered present is horrible. The use of technological learning would prevent this from occurring. A student that is taught through technological learning is solely responsible for proving their presence. If students want to be noticed and accounted for they must participate. Also, with technological learning we are more likely to have much more participation about the issues that are being raised. If someone from a traditional classroom wants to comment on a certain issue they fear being judged or embarrassed by their opinions. These people who worry about being judged no longer have this issue while on-line. Yes, they might be thought of differently by others, but if you were to pass this person on the street you would have no idea that it was the same person that you disagree with on-line.
The issue is not which teaching/learning style is better, but the information that is being retained and taught. The teachers need to worry about teaching the necessary tools for the students to be able to apply their own knowledge. If the only way that this will be obtained is that through technological learning then I guess this should be the learning style of the future. When you learn that 70% of information retained is done through discussions with others then technological learning would help students retain more information than traditional learning. With technological learning a student has discussion after discussion on-line with others. Like Claudia Wallis said, "Not only do all 17 students in the class participate, but twice as many outside the class have joined." (Wallis Pg.394) This is very true, not only do you have the opinions of only 17 students, but possibly thousands. In a traditional classroom you can only ever have 17 students involved in a discussion unless other arrangements have been made. On-line the arrangements don't need to be made it just happens. As Kelly A. Zito says, "Now, Computers are seen as a way to communicate." (Zito Pg.408) I agree that computers are becoming a main form of communication. I have noticed that this is true I have two friends that are out of the country, one is in Australia and the other is in Belgium. My friend that is in Belgium doesn't have Internet access because it is too expensive. Because she doesn't have Internet access we must write letters or phone each other. She has been gone for 4 months and I have written her 6 letters. On the other hand my friend in Australia has Internet access and we e-mail each other daily. This proves to me that computers are becoming a major part of our lives.
To me technological learning has many more advantages that traditional learning. You can learn when it's convenient for you, not Monday Wednesday Friday at 12 noon. Single mothers can do there learning while their children nap or attend school. Someone that works full-time can still be able to get some courses done at night or on weekends. Those people who live out of town or who live in a town with no university do not need to worry about commuting or moving just to attend school. On the other hand one of the serious issues that comes with technological learning is self-discipline. When people are at home they tend to be distracted very easily. Self-discipline is also an issue in the work place, but when you sit in an office you tend to do your work, at home the problem is getting to the office (study place).
