Transpiration is necessary for ascent of sap because this force which is generated in leaves is responsible for upward movement of water filled in xylem tracheids and vessels. This theory is calles transpiration pull and cohesion tension theory

When water gets evaporated from the surface of the leaves, the water is sucked up from the soil by the roots and is transported to the whole plant. This process is called transpiration pull. This fulfills the nutrition needed.
