Why is Variations beneficial to the species, but not necessary for the individual??

Variation are benefical for the survival of species.Population of organism filled, well defined place, or niches in the ecosystem using their ability to reproduce.However , niches can be changed because of reasons beyond the control of the organisms and could even wipe out entire population.
