why is velency of Mg is 2 in MgO and velency of Co is 1 in formula carbondioxide.

the valency of 'O' is always 2 but it gets simplified

Actually , I am telling you valence electrons are arranged in different ways in compounds. To balance the compound , velancy required diffrently.
