Water is considered as compound because of the following reasons :-

  1. It is called compound because it contains more than 2 molecules and both the molecules ( i.e Hydrogen and oxygen ) have different chemical properties.
  2. It cannot be separated by the application of physical methods.
  3. It can only be broken down by the applying chemical methods such as hydrolysis of water.
  4. In water , the molecules are bonded by the strong forces of attraction with each other that cannot be broken down easily.

Extra Information

1) A compound is a substance that is made up by the combination of two or more molecules having different chemical properties. For example - Water , Ammonia , etc.

2) A mixture is a group or the collection of different molecules which are not held together at the molecular level.

3) A mixture can be separated by physical methods ( such as magnetism or evaporation ) but a compound cannot be separated by physical methods.
