Why is water considered a compound? Mention any two points?
Answers
Answer:
Water is a molecule because it is made from atoms that have been chemically combined. It is also a compound because the atoms that make water are not all the same - some are oxygen and some are hydrogen.
Explanation: Water is considered as an compound because of the following reasons:-
1. It is made up of one atom of oxygen and two atoms of hydrogen. These total of three atoms are chemically combined with each other to form water.
2. The chemical property of water is totally different from that of it's constituents...i.e., from hydrogen and oxygen. Let us take a simple example to understand this. We know that hydrogen is a good fuel for combustion and oxygen is required for combustion. But water, a new product formed by the chemical bonding of hydrogen and oxygen, can put down fire up to a certain extent. If water was a mixture this would not be the case.
