why is water not used instead of mercury in thermometers. Pls tell in a simple language​

It is used in thermometer because it has high coefficient of expansion. Hence the slightest change in temperature is notable when it is used in a thermometer. It also has a high boiling point which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperature. So instead of water mercury is used in thermometer.

Mercury expands on heating..so when we have fever or hot temperature , Mercury rises up the thermometer tube..

we can then measure temperature by the calibrations ( markings like in a school scale)..

but when it comes to water , water does not have the property to expand like Mercury..if some amount of water evaporates then we will get wrong readings..
